Book Reviews

“Ray of Light” is Marlene McConnell’s deeply moving account of her experience, and that of others, with trauma and healing. She weaves together stories (they are generally harrowing, as you would expect) with research and lessons.

Even if you have not gone through some sort of trauma yourself, you very likely know someone who has, and so reading this book may give you a window on what they might be going through. I learned that there is a lot more to trauma than feeling depressed or grief-stricken. There are some gut-wrenching passages.

McConnell writes how after an experience she almost didn’t survive, she “felt stuck in a world that no longer made sense to me. I wondered why I only died metaphorically and not physically.” Written in a confidential, empathic tone, this is a very readable book. Highly recommended.

I appreciated the author’s authenticity and vulnerability in sharing her darkest moments and taking the reader through her journey toward the light and a joy-filled life. A worthwhile read for anyone who has experienced grief and loss.
